    Traineeship in the Directorate General Statistics

    The Directorate General Statistics consists of around 350 staff members

    who provide statistical products and services, as well as a whole range

    of aggregated and disaggregated data, to inform not only central banking

    and banking supervision policy decisions, but also the public at large,

    in close collaboration with the European System of Central Banks (ESCB),

    national competent authorities, Eurostat, the banking industry and other

    international bodies.

    You would be joining the Directorate General at a very interesting and

    challenging time, as we are working on modernising the data culture of

    the ECB, ESCB and ECB Banking Supervision, improving its fitness for a

    digital and globalised world in a period of rapid financial innovation.

    In your role as a trainee, you will be part of a team responsible for

    collecting data and/or producing statistical indicators and work closely

    with relevant stakeholders such as economists and banking supervisors.

    innovation in order to make a positive impact on the lives of European

    citizens.

    Your role

    As a trainee in Directorate General Statistics you will:

    * contribute to the work of the Directorate General or one of its

    divisions or sections;

    * gain an insight into the methodology, compilation and publication of

    macroeconomic statistics or large-scale granular/micro datasets in a

    policy-oriented environment;

    * work in a team and/or independently under the guidance of a mentor,

    taking the initiative and interacting with other members of staff and

    management;

    * potentially have an opportunity to complete a conceptual or empirical

    study and present it at a seminar, and develop statistical tools based

    on machine learning.

    Qualifications, experience and skills

    Essential:

    * a bachelor’s degree or higher in statistics, data science,

    economics, mathematics, finance, computer science, operational research

    or another relevant field (click here for details on degree

    equivalences);

    * good IT skills and a working knowledge of MS Office (in particular

    Word, Excel and PowerPoint);

    * familiarity with data and metadata management, analysis and

    visualisation;

    * familiarity with a statistical or mathematical software package

    and/or relational databases;

    * an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command

    of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the

    Common European Framework of Reference for Languages [2].

    Desired:

    * knowledge of economic statistics, data on financial markets and

    instruments, and/or international standards for statistics, accounting

    or banking supervision;

    * knowledge of techniques used in the management, analysis, modelling

    and visualisation of large datasets and unstructured data, such as data

    science tools and machine learning;

    * programming skills and knowledge of programming languages such as

    Python and R.

    Who can apply

    Students, including PhD students, or recent graduates can apply for a

    traineeship.

    All candidates should:

    * be a national of a Member State of the EU or of an acceding country;

    * be at least 18 years old;

    * have completed at least a first cycle qualification (minimum

    bachelor’s degree);

    * be fluent in English and in another official language of the EU.

    Following their most recent qualification candidates should:

    * have a maximum of 12 months’ professional experience;

    * have been a trainee for no more than six months;

    * not have been an ECB trainee or have worked for the ECB previously

    Closing date: 01.10.2021

    The traineeships will start in 2022 and run for a minimum period of six

    months which, depending on business needs, may be extended up to a total

    of twelve months. The earliest starting date will be in February 2022,

    while additional options will become available throughout 2022.
